i*write™ 3.2 Release Notes
New Features and Changes to
Setup
-
The major improvement in
release 3.2 is the addition of a spell checker. Pressing F11
will open a dialog to spell check the active item. In future releases
the spell checker will be further improved to offer a background (as
you type) spell checking option and other features.
-
The i*write setup packages now use
Microsoft's web bootstrapper technology. In many cases, this reduces
the size of the download because the Windows Installer files have only
to be downloaded if not already present on your system.
-
The i*write setup packages are now
digitally signed using Authenticode technology and a certificate
provided by Thawte. If you use
Microsoft Internet Explorer, files to be downloaded will automatically
be checked for digital signatures. Internet Explorer issues a warning
if a file is not digitally signed. If a file is signed, you are
guaranteed that the identity of the provider has been verified and
that the file has not been tampered with.

please see the known issues page.

i*write™ 3.0 Release Notes
-
We no
longer support Windows 95.
-
There are
now separate downloads available for:
These
downloads are functionally identical and they all include the Standard
(SE) and Plus Editions. However, the Windows 98 version will not run
under Windows 2000 or XP and vice versa.
-
The trial
period is now 30 days instead of 50 uses. If you'd like to extend the
trial period contact sales@rightmindlogic.com.
The trial version will let you test the features of both Editions.
When you buy one of the Editions, the key code you will receive will
determine which features (SE or Plus) will be available from then on.
-
Web
links: If you embed a link to a web site (an URL) into an item you
can now navigate to this web address by clicking on the link. The
program will open your default browser and take you to the web
address.
-
Numbered
lists.
-
Text
highlighting.
-
Multiple
Undo / Redo.
-
Improved
full-text search hit highlighting: Search hits are now highlighted
with a "yellow marker" instead of changing the text color to
red (hard to distinguish from black text for some users).
-
Password
recovery. Version 3.0 has now a way to reset passwords should you
have forgotten them. If you need to reset your passwords please
contact support@rightmindlogic.com.
Note that there is not one single password for the program but you
rather set passwords (Read, Write, Master) per journal.
-
Message
Log: The contents of previous sessions will no longer be
overwritten. Instead new messages will be appended to the log. When
the program starts, the user will no longer be reminded every time
something had been written to the log. Instead there will only be a
warning if the log grows bigger than 32k. The user can then email the
log, empty it (new function) or continue writing to the same log.
These functions are also accessible from the Help menu.
-
Slow
typing effect: Several users had reported that typing is very slow
(you type ahead and characters appear only with a delay). We had found
a cause for this and fixed it in version 2.2.0.25 but it turned out
there was still another bug contributing to this behavior. This has
now also been fixed.
-
If a full-text
search was active (i.e., search results are displayed in the
Search Window) and text was edited or entered on a tab, the program
would crash when the user attempted to switch to another tab (This
only happened if the Option Save on Switching Tabs was selected).
-
When
creating the first new item for a day the standard font and
font size was not set correctly (Arial 10-point).
-
Fixed
some inconsistencies when a tab is locked (e.g., it was
possible to create an item for a locked tab using the Create New Item
command).
-
The Export...
function on the Journal menu did not work. Nothing was exported
although there was no error message.
-
The Restore...
function on the Journal menu did not work if the Option Backup on Exit
(Automatic) was selected.
-
Fixed the
flickering effect when the program starts (flickering of
desktop icons and windows of other open programs). Also most other
sources of flickering were removed (exception see below: Known
issues).
-
Insertion
of additional blank lines (and other problems) when switching
back and forth between Multiple Tabs Display and Full Page Display.
-
When
saving items under Windows 2000, sometimes tabs and periods
would be added to the end of paragraphs.
-
New
design of command buttons.
-
Under XP
two different button styles are available (However, see Known
Issues #4 below)
-
Moved the
paragraph indentation buttons from the status bar to the
Paragraph Format toolbar.
-
Moved the
Tab Create Mode / Tab Replace Mode switch from the status bar
to the Views toolbar.
-
Moved the
Lock Tab / Unlock Tab (Read-only / Write-enable) switch from
the status bar to the Tab Operations toolbar.
-
Commands
that work on an open tab are now disabled if no tab is open.
-
Added Close
All Tabs command to the Tab menu.
-
Incompatibility
of passwords with previous i*write versions (This is by design). Version 3.0 will
detect if a journal was created with an earlier version of the program
and will reset all passwords to the empty string. You will be reminded
to reenter your passwords. If for some reason, you need to open the
journal with the old version 2.2, you will be able to read and write
the journal as long as you have not entered new passwords in version
3.0 but you can no longer access the Security options with version
2.2. If you need to manually reset your version 3.0 passwords, contact
support@rightmindlogic.com.
-
Before
you can install version 3.0, you have to remove any previous version
of i*write . Removing i*write will not remove the option
settings you have made which means you don't have to reenter them.
However, the disadvantage is that when i*write 3.0 starts it will read in your old toolbar
configuration which does of course not contain any new command
buttons. Select Customize... from the Options menu, make sure that all
toolbars are selected on the Toolbars tab, then click the Command tab
and move all new buttons to the appropriate toolbar in the program
(For details see the help files please).
-
Unlock/Upgrade...
on the Help menu will tell you that you successfully unlocked the
program no matter what you entered as Name and Key. You can tell that
this is not correct by looking at the program's title bar: It will
still contain "Evaluation Version - Unregistered". Only if
you enter the correct user name and product code which you received
from us will you be able to unlock the program.
-
There is
a conflict between the third-party solution we use to protect our
program and the new Visual Styles under Windows XP which
prevents some dialogs from displaying (e.g., the Create New Item
dialog). As a consequence, we have disabled the new XP Visual Styles
for the time being. This causes no loss of functionality but
nevertheless we will work with our partner to fix this as soon as
possible.
-
Depending
on the locale settings of your operating systems you may experience
problems with full-text search if the search index was built
under a different locale setting. The simple workaround is to select
first Delete Index from the Search menu and then Build Index.
-
Context-sensitive
help is not complete (There are command buttons and dialog
controls that have no link to the help files). This will be fixed in
one of the next point releases.
-
Although
much flickering has been removed in version 3.0, there still is
flicker when the window is resized.
-
In some
cases a full-text search highlight might not be removed.
-
If you
use certain special characters in your text, the highlighting of
full-text search hits may not be correct.
-
The
synchronization of a tab's modified state between Date and Category
Views does not always work correctly.
