Hardware Requirements

i*write™ has no special hardware requirements other than normal applications running under Windows:

  • i*write itself will take up approximately 5-8 MB of disk space (including the help files and depending on which file system is used on your computer).

  • On a bare-bones Windows 98 or NT 4.0 system, up to 18 MB will have to be installed on your hard disk (Microsoft redistributable components).

  • Although i*write can theoretically be operated with just a keyboard, we would certainly recommend a mouse.

  • Additional disk space will be required for your journal and the full-text search index (if installed).

Software Requirements

Note: We used to host the various Microsoft component downloads on our own website for your convenience but with so many versions of operating systems to support and Microsoft releasing service packs in quick succession this no longer makes sense. Below we point you to the relevant Microsoft locations.

General recommendation: It is always a good idea to get and install the latest service pack for your operating system from Microsoft. This will ensure that you have the current versions of important system components and the highest level of security. It will also spare you most of the separate downloads listed below.

i*write 3.2 has been designed for modern operating systems like Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

  • Operating systems:

    • Windows 98

    • Windows Me

    • NT 4.0

    • Windows 2000

    • Windows XP

  • Internet Explorer 4.01 or later needs to be installed on your system (it does not have to be the default browser).

  • Windows Installer Service 1.5 or later
This service is used to install programs in a safe and reliable manner. It is built into Windows 2000 and later (If you follow the above link and you're looking for the Windows 98 or Me version scroll down to the bottom of the page). Note: We have now included the necessary files in our setup packages for the various operating systems (except for XP which should have at least version 1.5 built in).

  • Microsoft Data Access Components 2.6 or later
We wanted i*write to be compatible with future Microsoft operating systems and scaleable to multi-user environments (for example using SQL Server). Therefore, i*write uses standard Microsoft database technology. The necessary software components are already included with Windows 2000 or later (but possibly an old version). They may also be present on older systems (for example, if you have Microsoft Office 2000 installed). The i*write setup program will help you to determine  what you need. See the download page for further instructions.

  • Microsoft Jet 4.0 database engine, service pack 7 or later
Before MDAC 2.6, this used to be part of the MDAC download but Microsoft has now put the Jet database components into a separate download.
